Extending the RD-Dryer Rang for Energy Efficient Material Conditioning

Clever Usage of Compressed Air: RD Dryer System from Blue Air Systems for Material though-puts up to 300 kg/h . Kundl (A), October 1, 2012: Blue Air Systems will be introducing the extended range of the 2011 introduced RD series; a complete modular built highly flexible dryer system to condition plastic resin with dry process air. New details have also been added to improve the operation and control of the entire process. With drying capacities ranging now from 0,05 to 300 kg/h, the efficient and energy saving dryers using compressed air reaches new dimensions.

The RD resin dryer series impresses with efficiency and innovative modularity using segmental design. The units are usually mounted directly onto the extruder throat of the plastic processing machine, but can just as well be installed as a central drying unit.
The modular RD-series consists of 4 main components: process air module, material hopper, dryer lid and hopper extension. This allows very quick changes of the hopper sizes to adapt to the needed material through-put and superior accessibility for maintenance.

Product Family has New Off Spring
RD stands for quick and easy changing of the basic hopper sizes and extensions. Now, adding to the existing RDX series (hopper sizes from 3,5 to 92 liters) the range of application has been downsized with the RDM series as well as upsized with the RDL dryer series. RDM stands for resin dryers with a through-put of 0,05 to 1,5 kg/h for small and micro injection units with hopper sizes ranging from 2 to 7 liters. The new dryers are equipped with double wall Borosilicate glass for optimal thermal decoupling, stepless adjustable material sensors in combination with an automatic hopper loading device and a full range process controller, as used on the “bigger brother” RDX system.

The three hopper sizes 2, 4 and 7 liters are available in two versions, RDM Integral and RDM Split. In the Integral version, the main components build one unit, in the Split version; the process air module and the hopper are separated to allow a more flexible installment to improve ease of use and to take the weight off the extruder. The larger RDL dryers are available with hopper volumes between 100 and 1.800 liters. The air specialists from the Tyrol have now opened the door for perfectly dried plastic resin up to a material through put of 300 kg/h.

Better und more constant drying performance with the compressed air principle
In the entire range from 0,05 to 300 kg/h, the RD hoppers offer perfect conditions for material flow allowing state of the art drying performance based on the compressed air principle. By expanding pre dried compressed air to atmospheric pressure the dew point of the air sinks to an extremely low level. Subsequent heating of the air to the set temperature, reduces the relative humidity of the process air. Surface defects and defects of the mechanical properties of the plastic part due to high residual moisture, can be deleted with this principle. According to the manufacturer, the RD-series has the lowest energy consumption of dryers on the market.

Unique Features of the RDL-Series
The dryer series works without a desiccant dryer or the need of cooling water. With literally no moving parts, maintenance work is not necessary and any cleaning work is reduced to an absolute minimum. The novel segmental construction of the units allows the user to easily adapt to any needed material though-put. If needed for highly demanded applications such as the production of PET performs, the dew point of the air can be lowered down to -70°C (-94°F).By recycling high quality exhaust compressed air used on injection blow molding machines, energy costs for drying the material can be reduced to an unachieved level in plastic processing (60%).

One of the main aspects of the RD dyer series is the complete circulation of dry air around each and every resin through the ring jet system. In the RDL series this is supported by the integrated heat injector system for optimal conditioning of the process air. Bernhard Stipsits, managing director: “The RD dryers set new standards in performance, functionality and flexibility. The principle of thorough drying, resin for resin using lowest possible energy consumption has been adapted to larger volume hoppers with greater material through-put to enlarge the application range.”

Practice Oriented Process Control
The RD series convinces with ergonomics/user-friendliness and functionality with stepless adjustable proximity sensors. Large, swiveling and removable display and control elements which are readable from a 15 m distance allow an efficient and secure process monitoring.
