A top search on environmental artificial intelligence (AI) system Ubuntoo following its launch in late 2023 was plastic packaging.
This was followed by emissions, energy, climate, biodiversity, and agriculture.
Ubuntoo is an AI system for environmental practitioners and is reportedly in use by teams at companies such as The Coca Cola Company, Target, and Subway.
Former vice presidents at Coca-Cola Peter Schelstraete and Venkatesh Kini are behind the engine, which offers action-based solutions on a wide variety of topics including plastic reduction, recycling, energy transition, and supply chain efficiencies.
“Are there biodegradable coatings for waterproofing?” and “what are two ways to drive down emissions at a skincare company?” are two example questions that can be put to the AI platform.
The Clorox Company partnered with Ubuntoo to meet its sustainability targets, including reducing virgin plastic and fibre packaging by 50 percent and cutting emissions in half by 2030. Ubuntoo provided solutions and Clorox is now said to be 85% of the way to achieving its goal of 100% recyclable, reusable, or compostable packaging by 2025.
Ubuntoo co-founder Peter Schelstraete commented: “It’s encouraging to see such high rankings for emissions and plastic packaging reduction on the Ubuntoo platform.”
Sian Sutherland, co-founder of A Plastic Planet and PlasticFree added: “It should come no surprise that plastic tops the searches for 2023. Plastic is as much a climate and a health issue as it is a waste issue.
“With the UN Global Plastic Treaty currently being negotiated, now more than ever we need rapid access to high quality knowledge and solutions. It is only through collective action, real investment and shared information that we will be able to shift to a truly circular economy. And plastic, however hard we try, is not going to fit into that circle.”
