The frozen Arctic Ocean contains up to 12,000 tiny pieces of plastic per litre of sea ice, according to research showing that even the most remote parts of the planet are highly polluted with plastic waste.
Seventeen types of plastic, including nylon, polyester and cellulose acetate used to make cigarette filters, were found trapped in ice samples collected in five areas of the Arctic.
By examining the type of plastic trapped in the ice, researchers concluded that some of it probably came from a massive “garbage patch” in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and California.
