UK police uncover major plastics theft
United Kingdom: It may not be copper theft on the grand scale, but a £500 000 plastics recycling scam in the UK has led to the arrest of PM Plastics owner Paul Matthews. The recycling entrepreneur was involved in the stealing of more than 150 000 plastic trays, which were processed into 230 tonnes of granulate.
A police investigation revealed that Matthews plotted together with delivery drivers of Warburtons and Bakers Basco when the two companies launched a recycling scheme for £500-a-tonne plastic bread trays back in 2010. The theft only came to light when it was discovered that more than 90 000 trays had fallen off the radar.
Matthews has been ordered to pay back around £10 000 within three months. Police officers managed to retrieve more than 5000 plastic trays, along with 3 tonnes of already-processed plastics.
