ALPAR and the Botanical Garden Team Up to Recycle
The Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling will be holding its annual plastic garden pot recycling event on Saturday, August 20th.
The event will take place in the parking lot next to Anchorage’s Alaska Botanical Garden, south of Tudor Road on Campbell Air Strip Road.
ALPAR Executive Director, Mary Fisher said in a press release, “This is the 10th year of this popular event where residents can recycle their plastic garden containers and give them a new life… Anchorage’s recycling center normally does not take plastic pots or tubs for recycling, as they are a less valuable grade of plastic and not cost effective to collect on a regular basis. However, they are happy to do it once a year. Last year over 3 tons of plastic pots were recycled or reused.”
All plastic garden pots, cell packs and trays will be accepted for recycling or reuse.
Pots will be baled and shipped to markets in Seattle by WestRock’s Anchorage Recycling Center and turned into new plastic products .
Faltz Nursery has also partnered with ALPAR to offer garden pot recycling through August 20 at their location at 1401 Labar in the Huffman Business Park. Commercial plant sellers can drop off pots directly at the Anchorage Recycling Center on August 22, 23, or 24 during regular business hours.
Alaska Botanical Garden is offering recyclers free admission on that day. “It’s a great way to recycle more plastic and visit our beautiful Botanical Garden” said Fisher.
